Expectations are great! Or are they?

Hmm… Expectation?

Usually I don’t formally define something but according to oxford, an expectation is a strong belief that something will happen or be the case.

Yep no disagreeing with that.

Expectations are great! You know, they’re motivators. They give you something to strive for and make sure you don’t settle for less than you anticipate.

However, the expectations in today’s society are unrealistically high. Whether it’s towards ourselves or others. Yea, there’s no doubt that I just said they’re motivators. But… That doesn’t mean that’s always the case. Sometimes they have opposite effects. Such high unrealistic expectations, like expecting to wake up with $1 million in your bank account without putting any effort towards earning it or simply getting 100% in an exam when you haven’t studied or even attended class. Yea have fun waiting for those to magically happen.

Such unrealistically high expectations lead to low self esteem, which in turn leads to low self efficacy, which obviously means these expectations have now become demotivators.

What’s the point of pointing out all this?

Well, it’s to show that we have to be careful with the expectations we are setting for ourselves and others. You see I’m not saying don’t have expectations. I just mean keep them realistic. Don’t expect too much or too little, keep it moderate and reasonable.

Just remember to relax and steadily walk up the ladder of expectations one rung at a time.
